Statement of Support for Regional Public Transit
We, the signatories of this statement, encourage robust, swift implementation of the Greater RVA Transit Vision Plan so that our region can reap the rewards of a truly comprehensive public transit system.
Frequent, far-reaching public transit is a powerful tool for building community, reducing poverty, fueling our economy, and improving public health. It increases access to jobs, housing, education, health care, and other key destinations, community events, and regional amenities. Transit provides essential mobility for those who do not or cannot drive a personal vehicle, including seniors, people with disabilities, youth, and anyone who cannot afford the substantial cost of owning and operating a car. It also serves visitors to our region arriving by train, plane, or bus.
Frequent, far-reaching public transit creates the backbone around which people can build their lives, develop businesses, and deepen neighborhood ties, and it yields environmental benefits, including cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
We applaud the work of regional leaders to increase public transit investments and service, and we call for them to join together to make the Greater RVA Transit Vision Plan a reality, generating mutual prosperity and interconnection throughout our region.
